Central Service
The Central Service of the General State Archives (GSA) is housed in a modern building in Psychiko.
In 2014, the General State Archives (GSA) celebrated one hundred years since their establishment, marking a long historical journey of uninterrupted operation and contribution.

Implementing a policy of openness and outreach, the Central Service (CS) of the GSA, making use of its modern building, leads a series of scientific and cultural activities, opening the doors of the GSA to the public through the organization of original exhibitions, screenings of rare audiovisual material, participation in innovative initiatives and educational programs.

The Central Service organizes a series of educational programs for students and teachers of all educational levels, adapted to the age and skills of the participants. These programs include workshops, archival material exhibitions and audiovisual presentations, through which users become familiar with important events in history.
Administrative Structure of the Central Service (CS)
The Central Service (CS) operates at the level of a General Directorate, headed by the General Director (GD) of the GSA.
It is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the individual Directorates and Departments, at both central and regional level, as well as for taking all necessary measures to improve the efficiency of the Services.
Organizational Chart of the GSA
The General Directorate of the GSA consists of the following organizational units:
- Directorate of Acquisition and Processing of Archives
- Directorate of Archival Research, Outreach, Communication, Conservation and Preservation of Archives
- Directorate of Administrative and Technical Services
- Directorate for the Coordination of Regional Services (RS), under which the individual Departments of the GSA Regional Services operate
- GSA Directorate – Historical Archives of Macedonia, which includes the Department of the Cartographic Heritage Archive (CHA), in accordance with Article 5 of Law 4109/2013 (A΄ 176)
- GSA Directorate – Corfu Archives, which also includes the Paxoi Archival Repository, as the “GSA – Local Archives of Paxoi” is henceforth renamed, based in Paxoi
- GSA Directorate – Historical Archives of Epirus
what public records They constitute the overwhelming volume of the material and the main responsibility of the General Archives of the State (GAS).
public records in accordance with the provisions of the new N.4610_2019 (see Article 161) of the General Assembly, the files produced by the Supreme State leadership, such as the Presidency of the Republic, by the Prime Minister, the Ministers, the Deputy Ministers and the General Secretariat of the Government, General Secretariat of Coordination, are designated government work, ministries, public services, judicial authorities, public law legal entities, local government agencies, private legal entities, as well as other organizations and businesses, which fall under the public sector, registries, The notaries, the mortgage offices, the educational institutions, the institutions of the diaspora Hellenism.
Public records are divided into the following categories:
a) actively, which include all documents, testimonies and documents used daily to process the current affairs of a service, organization or body and are kept at their place of production.
b) semiactive, which include all the documents, testimonies and documents, which, although they have ceased to be considered active, according to case a’, cannot undergo a liquidation because the retention time has not expired, according to the legislation that governs them. The GAS monitors the semi-active files in terms of their good observance by their production service.
c) inactive, which include all the presumptions, testimonies and documents the retention time of which has expired, according to the legislation that governs them, and no longer have official utility for their producer. The GAS must receive the inactive files from their production body, after the liquidation process and retain the right to further process them.
d) perpetual service utility, which include all documents, testimonies and documents which, regardless of their age, still remain active. After thirty years have passed since their production, the GAKs ensure that they receive digitized copies. The records of this category are compulsorily submitted to the GIS after sixty (60) years from the time of their production.
If the GAKs find, following a complaint or report, that the preservation of public records by the generating bodies They are faulty or that the public’s access to them is difficult, they may request the immediate deposit of the specific files in their services.
The records of the public services that are digitized or transferred to another material substrate, according to the development of the technology, are submitted to the GAS, under the responsibility of the liaison officer of par. 3 of article 193.
Central (KY) of G.A.K.
public records
In the Central Service (K.Y.) of the GAS, the following are distinguished: a) The large categories of 19’s archivesth century and specifically the period of the match, of Ioannis Kapodistrias, of Othon, of George A (with case-by-case chronological overlaps) and (b) the Archives of 20th and 21th century, which come from public services of both the Central Administration (Central Services of Ministries, General Secretariats) and the Decentralized (Regions, Prefectures, Municipalities), as well as Court Archives and notarial authorities.
Private archives and collections
The small collections They include private collections, personal archives, family records and mixed collections with varied content, with the letter K referring to the word “box”. They are imported into the GAS through donation, purchase, deposit, public shipping, official admission, etc. The majority of them contain private archives and collections, however in several cases public records are also found, which were acquired through purchase, donation, etc..
the Collection of Vlachogianni It is an important collection of K.Y. of the GAK which consists of file files, manuscripts, boxes with thematic content, printed and bibliographic sheets that come from the personal collection of the founder of the General Archives of the State, historian Yiannis Vlachogiannis (Catalogs 1) – f’).
the Collection of manuscripts of GAK consists of manuscripts of ecclesiastical, historical, legal and philological content, which extend from the 11th to the 19th century.
the Collection of engravings It includes maps, lithographs and albums, among which the map of Riga occupies an important place.
Substrate Material:
All records, public and private, can be imprinted on a wide range of substrates, such as loose documents, handwritten books, photos or even in electronic format.
what audiovisual files They constitute a special category, which includes photographs and photographic albums, tapes, audio cassettes and CDs (from purchases, donations or public shipments), while corresponding material is also found in other files and collections, information marked in the research tools.
According to the system followed in the GAS, each file is inserted into the archival data management system @archeommeni, is registered in the introduction book and is categorized as to its producer (special index number – A.E.E.).
