Guided Tours at the GSA

The General State Archives (GSA), both the Central Service and the Regional Services, offer guided tours of their facilities, allowing visitors to become acquainted with the science of archival studies as well as with the importance of archives in preserving the collective memory of a country.

At the same time, these tours support the teaching of various academic subjects. For this reason, the tours are tailored according to the type of audience and are adapted to the age group and the purpose of each visit.

The aim of the guided tours / visits to the GSA is:

  • To introduce visitors to archival material and the methods used for its processing.
  • To stimulate their interest in the history, economy, society and culture of our country.
  • To raise awareness about the usefulness of archival processing and the many ways archival material can be utilized.
The entire guided tour process lasts approximately two hours.

Guided Tours at the Central Service of the GSA

The process for conducting guided tours at the Central Service of the GSA is summarized as follows:

  • An authorized staff member from the Department of Outreach, Communication and Educational Activities informs visitors about the Central Service and the network of the Regional Services of the GSA.
  • This is followed by the screening of audiovisual material (video) with information about the Service and its activities.
  • The tour concludes with visits to:
    • the Department of Archival Processing, Indexing of the National Archives Registry (EAR) and Special Historical Archives,
    • the Department of Conservation and Preservation of Archival Material,
    • the Department of the Reading Room and Archival Research.

Guided Tours for Students / University Students at the Corfu Archives

By prior arrangement, small groups of students / university students up to 15 people are guided through the facilities of the Corfu Archives (reception area, Civil Registry, lecture hall, small exhibition space, heraldry exhibition, Reading Room, maps and plans room, Library, archival repositories, Conservation and Bookbinding Laboratory).

So far, the following have been hosted:

  • Primary schools of Corfu and the wider region.
  • Lower secondary schools from the city and countryside of Corfu.
  • High schools, the Corfu Music School, the Second Chance School and other educational structures.
  • Schools from Paxos, Xanthi, Chalkida, Ioannina and other areas.
  • Educational groups and international teams, such as Erasmus+ students from European countries.

The Corfu Archives have also participated in educational activities such as the programmes:

  • “Educational Weeks of Culture & Volunteering”
  • “Bridges of Culture”

organized by the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education.

Guided tours and broader cooperation are also maintained with Higher Education institutions, especially with the Ionian University (Departments of Archives, Library Science and Museology, History, Translation & Interpreting, Music Studies, Audio & Visual Arts), as well as with Universities and Higher Education institutions in Greece and abroad at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Guided Tours for Individuals at the Corfu Archives

By prior arrangement, guided tours at the Corfu Archives are organized for interested citizens, either individually or in small groups.

The Corfu Archives have hosted visits and guided tours by personalities from the fields of politics, science, literature and the arts, both from Greece and abroad, as well as representatives of various organizations.

TOURS TO THE G.A.K.
The G.A.K., Central Service and Regional Services, carry out guided tours in their spaces, which contribute to visitors coming into contact with the science of archivality as well as the importance of archives in maintaining the collective memory of a country. At the same time, they act as a supporter in teaching a variety of subjects. With this in mind, the guided tours are specialized according to the categories of the public and are adapted each time to the ages and purpose of their visit. Purpose of guided tours / visits to G.A.K. are:
  • The contact of the visitors with archival material and getting to know the methods of its processing.
  • The mobilization of their interests related to the history, economy, society and culture of our country.
  • Their awareness of the usefulness of archival processing, but also the multiple ways of utilizing archival entities.
       The whole process of the tour takes about two hours.       The process of carrying out the guided tours at the Central Service of the G.A.K. It is summed up as follows:
  • The competent employee from the Department of Promotion, Communication and Educational Actions   of the Central Service of the G.A.K. Informs visitors about the central service and the network of regional services of the G.A.K.
  • This is followed by a viewing of audio-visual material (video) with information about the service and its activities.
  • The tour concludes with a visit: a. in the Section File Processing, National Index of Archives (E.E.A.) and Special Historical Archives, b. in the department of maintenance and preservation of archival material, as well as c. in the Department of Reading and Archival Research.

TOURS FOR STUDENTS / STUDENTS IN THE ARCHIVES OF CORFU Upon consultation, they are guided around the premises (reception room, registry office, lecture hall, small periodic exhibition space, eco-label exhibition, reading room, map and drawing room, library, archives, conservation and bookbinding workshop) and in history of Corfu Archives Small groups of students (up to 15 people). They have been hosted so far: – Elementary Schools (A, B, C, E, 6, IV, IV, St. Francis, Paxos, Agros, Gastouri, School Center of Meliteia), – Gymnasiums (A, B, E, 6, Agro, Argyradon, Acharavi Kastellanon Messias, Peroulades), – High School (A, B, C, E, Agro, Argyradon, Skriperou, Korakianas, Corfu Music School, Second Chance School) of the city and the countryside of Corfu as well as the wider Greek region (Schools of Paxos, Xanthi, Chalkida, Zosimaia School of Ioannina) and various educational collectives (Erasmus plus students from 5 European countries, sports summer Camp Corfu Gymnastics Association, tutoring students).
