Organisational Structure
The General State Archives (GSA) operate in accordance with the provisions of the new Law 4610/2019 , which was recently adopted. They constitute an independent public Service reporting directly to the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs (Article 169).
They form a unified Service consisting of the Central Service (CS), which includes 7 Directorates, 54 Departments of Regional Services and 7 Archival Repositories.

Within the Service of the General State Archives (GSA) operates a collective body entitled “Supervisory Board of the General State Archives”.
The composition of the Supervisory Board consists of nine members: the President and eight members who have demonstrable experience in archival matters and have published archival research and studies, or research and studies on medieval and modern Greek history, as well as the Head of the Service responsible for the GSA.
The Director General of the GSA also participates in the meetings of the Supervisory Board as rapporteur, without voting rights.
The term of office of the Supervisory Board is three years. Its operation and responsibilities are defined in Article 186 of Law 4610/2019 .

The Head of the Central Service (CS) of the General State Archives (GSA) holds the rank of Director General (DG) and is responsible for the overall administration of the autonomous service of the GSA.
The position of the Director General is a full-time and exclusive appointment. The Director General serves as the scientific and administrative head of both the Central Service and the Regional Services (RS).
The term of office is four years and may be renewed once, following a positive recommendation from the Supervisory Board of the GSA. The term of the outgoing Director General is extended until the newly appointed Director General assumes office, in accordance with the provisions of Law 4610/2019 .
Central Service
Within the General State Archives (GSA) operates a Central Service (CS) at the level of a General Directorate, headed by the Director General (DG) of the GSA.
The Central Service is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the individual Directorates and Departments, both at central and regional level, as well as for the adoption of measures aimed at improving the effectiveness of the Services’ operation.
The General Directorate of the GSA consists of the following organizational units:
- Directorate of Archival Acquisition and Processing.
- Directorate of Archival Research, Outreach, Communication, Conservation and Preservation.
- Directorate of Administrative and Technical Services.
- Directorate for the Coordination of Regional Services (RS), under which the individual departments of the GSA Regional Services operate.
- Directorate of GSA – Historical Archives of Macedonia, under which operates the Department of Cartographic Heritage Archives (CHA), in accordance with Article 5 of Law 4109/2013 (A΄ 176).
- Directorate of GSA – Corfu Archives, which also includes the Paxoi Archival Repository, as the former “GSA – Local Archives of Paxoi” has been renamed.
- Directorate of GSA – Historical Archives of Epirus.

The 54 Departments of the General State Archives (GSA) constitute the Regional Services (RS), along with the 7 Archival Repositories, which operate in accordance with the provisions of Article 174 of Law 4610/2019 .
